Flora has taught at every level of violin playing - from beginners to concerto-level students.
For beginners, her teaching is based in the Suzuki Violin Method and its foundational idea that “every child can.” She has two principles when teaching the basics of violin playing: first, that the physical action of playing the violin requires laying careful groundwork reinforced by consistent daily practice and second, that the musical side of playing the violin is developed through ear training, listening, and learning how each child hears music in their own head. This translates to a practice regimen that values consistency over quantity - 10 minutes of playing and listening every day is better than two hours once a week.
When teaching advanced students, Flora believes that a personalized approach to technical issues is the key to unlocking a student’s full range of musical expression. Working with a student to give them a better understanding of the mechanics of violin playing is something Flora feels allows students not only to be more successful when playing the violin, but allows students to develop a feeling of musical agency and a deeper connection to playing music.
